Building Resilience program

Client: City of Greater Geraldton
Industry: Local Government
Focus Areas: Leadership Resilience, Emotional Intelligence, Change Agility

In 2020, the City of Greater Geraldton Executive Team faced a series of complex organisational and environmental challenges, exacerbated by the uncertainty and disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Team cohesion had been tested, and confidence in navigating ongoing change needed to be restored.

The City partnered with Future Institute of Australia to design and deliver a Building Resilience program that would help re-establish unity, strengthen personal and professional resilience, and equip leaders with strategies to respond to ongoing change.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the entire program was designed to be delivered virtually. The solution comprised three targeted learning sessions, underpinned by diagnostic tools and practical eLearning to reinforce learning:

  • Session 1 – Developing Emotional Intelligence
  • Session 2 – Responding Positively to Change
  • Session 3 – Building Resilience

Before attending the workshops, participants completed a customised eLearning module that included:

  • An Emotional Intelligence self-assessment
  • A Change Orientation diagnostic tool
  • Foundational concepts and models to supportlearning

There were also a range of practical activities and tools that enabled the City of Greater Geraldton Leaders to apply what they learnt (into their personal and professional life).

Customisation

Future Institute worked closely with the City of Greater Geraldton to understand the challenges that leaders were facing.

From here the Future Institute team created meaningful activities that were aligned with these challenges to allow the leaders to reflect on how they could apply the tools and strategies to their roles in real time.

Program Delivery

There were three modules for this program and as it was delivered during lock down periods of the pandemic it was delivered virtually.  The three modules were delivered over 3 x 3 hour virtual workshops.  The second program was delivered in a combination of virtual and face to face due to restrictions being lifted.

Outcomes and Results

The CEO and other Senior Leaders were highly engaged and reported nothing but positive feedback about the way the program was delivered and the quality of the facilitation.

They were so happy with the result that they requested the same program be delivered to all of the City’s Coordinators and Supervisors.  This program was rolled out in the first half of 2021 and was just as successful.
