Managing Personal Health and Wellbeing as a Leader
We’re well into the year and well into winter. The colder mornings, shorter days and busy schedules can leave many leaders feeling a little less energised than they did a few months ago. As leaders, we spend so much time supporting our teams, solving problems and helping others succeed that it can be easy to overlook our own wellbeing.
One of the most important things to remember is that your energy is one of your greatest leadership assets. Leading people, making sound decisions, managing competing priorities and creating a positive team culture all require focus, resilience and emotional presence. Give yourself permission to pause throughout the day, take regular breaks and resist the temptation to fill every spare moment with another task. A short walk outside, a coffee in the sunshine or simply stepping away from your desk for a few minutes can help you reset and return with greater clarity.
It’s also important to protect your time. Being a supportive leader doesn’t mean being available every minute of the day. Setting healthy boundaries helps prevent burnout, allows you to focus on what matters most, and ensures you have the capacity to lead your team effectively.
Finally, check in with yourself as often as you check in with your team. Celebrate what’s going well, recognise when you’re feeling stretched, and don’t be afraid to ask for support when you need it. Strong leaders understand that resilience isn’t about doing everything alone—it’s about knowing when to recharge and when to lean on others.
Looking after yourself isn’t a luxury; it’s a leadership responsibility. When you prioritise your own health and wellbeing, you’re better equipped to support your team, make better decisions and create an environment where others can thrive.
